Compassionate care
Hands-on help with washing, dressing and moving safely — done gently, at the person's pace, with their privacy protected.
We are a home care NGO supporting elderly, sick and vulnerable people with compassionate care, basic healthcare assistance, emotional support and essential services — so they can live with dignity and comfort.
Why we exist
For most of the households we visit, the difference between staying at home and leaving it is a few hours of help a day.
It is rarely a dramatic amount of care. It is somebody to steady a person getting out of bed, to make sure the tablets are actually taken, to cook something hot, and to notice when a cough has turned into something worse.
When that help is not there, the decline is quick and the options narrow fast — an avoidable fall, a readmission, and then a move away from the home and the street a person has known for decades.
A Better Day exists to close that gap. We provide the practical, human help that keeps a household going, for people who cannot buy it on the open market.
Our work
Every visit combines some of these. Which ones, and how many hours, is decided with the household rather than for it.
Hands-on help with washing, dressing and moving safely — done gently, at the person's pace, with their privacy protected.
Medication reminders, routine checks, wound and mobility support, and a written note the family and the doctor can both read.
Company, conversation and reassurance. Loneliness is not a side issue in old age — it is often the main one.
Meals, shopping, laundry, getting to appointments, and the paperwork nobody explains. The things that keep a home running.
How we work
Care that is delivered as a checklist is technically complete and humanly useless. We give carers enough time to do the job properly and to sit down for a minute.
Trust is the working part of home care. A rota that changes every week undoes it. We protect continuity in the schedule rather than hoping for it.
We start with a visit, not a form. The family says what the hardest part of the day is, and the plan is built around what they already do well.
If what somebody needs is skilled nursing, hospice or a programme we do not run, we point them to the right door instead of taking the referral.
Anyone can call and get a straight answer about what is possible, whether or not they end up as a client.
Who we help
Most people reach us at a turning point rather than a planned one — after a fall, after a diagnosis, or after a family member finally admits they cannot keep going alone.
Managing on the good days, with nobody to notice on the bad ones. A few hours of company and a set of eyes changes the whole week.
The weeks after an illness or a discharge are the hardest. We cover them — medication, mobility, meals, and a call to the clinic when something changes.
Frailty, memory trouble, or simply no one nearby. Routine and a familiar face do more than any new arrangement can, so we send the same carer back.
A daughter, a wife, a neighbour who has not had a day off in years. We take the shift so they can sleep, work, or see their own doctor.
Dignity is not a soft word. It is somebody being washed by a person who knows their name, at an hour they chose.
How we describe the standard to every new carerOur carers
Home care lives or dies on the person who knocks on the door. Most of ours came to this work by caring for somebody in their own family first, and they bring that standard with them.
What we ask for is patience, reliability and a steady manner with people who are frightened or in pain. The rest — the practical training, the safeguarding, the record-keeping — we teach.
We would rather run a smaller team of people who stay than a large one that changes every month. Turnover is the thing that quietly ruins home care, and it is the number we watch most closely.
Where we work
We are based at 5861 NW 17th Ave in the 33142 ZIP code, and we visit households across Miami-Dade. If you are not sure whether your street is covered, call and ask — the answer is usually yes.
One phone call, ten minutes, no obligation. We will tell you honestly whether we are the right help and what it would involve.
