You do not need to be a nurse. Most of what is missing in the households we visit is time, attention, and somebody noticing in the first place.

Where the need actually is

The hard part is not funding. It is finding people in time.

The households that need this most are usually the quietest. Nobody complains, nobody asks, and by the time anyone notices, the situation has already tipped into a crisis that could have been prevented months earlier.

So the single most useful thing a neighbour can do costs nothing and takes two minutes: tell us the name and the street. Everything else below helps too, but that one is the bottleneck.

If an elder on your block is living alone, or you have not seen somebody for a while, tell us. We will follow up ourselves, carefully and without making a scene of it.

  • You do not need their permission to tell us you are worried
  • You can stay anonymous if that keeps things easier on the street
  • Clinics, churches and hospital discharge staff refer to us the same way
  • If we are the wrong service, we pass it to the right one

Volunteer an afternoon

Volunteering here is not filling envelopes. It is sitting with somebody for an hour, driving them to a clinic, or carrying shopping up a flight of stairs they cannot manage any more.

  • Friendly visits — a standing hour with the same person each week
  • Driving — appointments, pharmacy runs, the occasional errand
  • Shopping and deliveries — groceries and prescriptions
  • Paperwork help — sitting with someone and working through forms
  • Small repairs — a grab rail, a fan, a door that will not close

What we ask: reliability more than hours. One afternoon a month that actually happens is worth more than a weekly commitment that lapses after a fortnight.

Donations pay for the hours no programme covers. That is usually the difference between adequate care and care that actually holds a household together.

  • The extra visit in a week where somebody is deteriorating
  • An emergency overnight when a family carer is taken ill
  • An air conditioner in August, a grab rail, a working fridge
  • Covering the first weeks for a household still waiting on a decision

If you have the patience for this work, we will train you for the rest. Most of our carers came to it by looking after somebody in their own family first.

  • What matters: patience, reliability, a steady manner with frightened people
  • What we provide: training before your first visit, and supervision after it
  • How we schedule: consistent assignments, so you build a real relationship
  • Prior experience is welcome but not required

You do not need to be certain, and you will not be wasting our time. These are the things neighbours notice first, long before anything official does.

  • Post or newspapers piling up, or curtains that stay shut
  • Somebody who used to be out every day and now is not
  • Noticeable weight loss, or the same clothes over several days
  • Bruises, or a fall they are playing down
  • A family carer who has stopped answering their phone
  • An air conditioner that has been broken through a Miami summer

The people who need this most are the ones nobody has checked on. That is the whole problem, and a neighbour is the only one positioned to solve it.
